After School

6th_single_main_album

After School not only stands out as the only girl group in K-pop with an admission-graduation concept, but eventually became known for its incomparable live stage performances. With a lineup that’s boasted as little as five members and grown to as big as nine, the group has pulled out everything from tap dances to drum lines to cane dances for TV broadcasts. But After School outdid themselves recently, when the current eight-member lineup trained six months for an athletic pole dancing routine for new single “First Love” (below). The group then showed off its pole-dancing prowess for each TV taping. The girl group represents the true “entertainment” side of K-pop while still boasting a collection of pop music confections.

Sistar

SISTAR-ocean-world

Known as today’s digital-selling monsters in Korea, fourpiece SISTAR has become one of the most consistent groups in K-pop, with hit single after hit single elevating them towards the top of the K-pop girl group rankings. Since the K-Pop Hot 100 introduction in late 2011, SISTAR has the most No. 1s of any group (four), while two members have multiple solo No. 1s (leader Hyorin has three, singer Soyou has two). Meanwhile, the group’s splinter duo project Sistar19 — made up of Hyorin and rapper Bora — went on to be the biggest hit of 2013. Soyou also tied the all-time chart record when her solo hit “Some” spent six weeks at No. 1 atop the chart. SISTAR is a textbook example of how valuable a girl group can be when each member has charms and skills to ultimately make the entire outfit a supergroup.

2ne1

2NE1 11

If Girls’ Generation is K-pop’s modern-day Beatles, 2NE1 is its Rolling Stones. With a musical style that opts for attitude-heavy hip-hop, EDM and reggae in place of bubblegum pop, the quartet stood out in K-pop for their fierce attitude and out-there fashion. Along with Wonder Girls and Girls’ Generation, the quartet helped spread Korean girl groups internationally, eventually becoming the first female act to play solo U.S. arena shows. While accruing fans like will.i.am — who featured them on his “#willpower” LP — and designer Jeremy Scott, the girls cultivated an impressive American fanbase that sent their new album “Crush” to No. 61 on the Billboard 200 — the highest-charting record for all K-pop acts on the albums charts.

Wonder Girls

Wonder Girls (Korean: 원더걸스, Chinese: 奇迹女孩, Japanese: ワンダーガールズ) is a South Korean girl group, whose current line-up is Sunye, Yubin, Yeeun, and Hyelim. They are managed by their producer, the singer-songwriter Park Jin-Young under his talent agency, JYP Entertainment. They are co-managed in the United States by Creative Artists Agency. The group’s name, ‘Wonder Girls’, comes from the idea that they are “the girls who can amaze the world”.

The group began their entry into the American market in 2009 as an opening act for The Jonas Brothers’ World Tour, performing the English version of their hit single “Nobody“. In late 2009, their song charted at number seventy-six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making the Wonder Girls the first South Korean group to enter the chart.[6][7] In 2010, Wonder Girls entered the Chinese market with the compilation album Wonder Girls that included Chinese language versions of “Tell Me”, “Nobody” and “So Hot”. In 2012, Wonder Girls signed with DefStar Records, a subsidiary of Sony Music Japan, for their Japanese debut.

It was announced on November 26, 2012, that the group would be taking a break because of Sunye’s marriage, with the other members focusing on their own activities. On December 21, 2013, Ahn Sohee‘s contract with JYP Entertainment as a member of Wonder Girls expired and she decided not to renew her contract with JYP Entertainment as a member of Wonder Girls, effectively leaving the group.

Girls’ Generation (Hangul: 소녀 시대; Japanese: 少女時代, also known as SNSD or So Nyeo Shi Dae) is a South Korean girl group formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2007. Originally a nine-member group, it now consists of Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona and Seohyun. Jessica, a former member, was officially dismissed on September 30, 2014.

The group gained attention at the beginning of their career with songs such as “Into the New World” and “Kissing You” but it was not until 2009 when they gained significant popularity with their hit single “Gee“, which was classified by the online music store MelOn as the most popular song of the decade in South Korea (ranking based on chart performance). The group solidified their place in the South Korean music industry with follow-up singles “Tell Me Your Wish“, “Run Devil Run“, and “Oh!” from late 2009 to early 2010. In 2011, after a series of activities in Japan, the group returned to the South Korean music scene with “The Boys“, which was released in three languages: Korean, Japanese, and for the first time, English. In 2010 alone, the group sold more than 11,730,000 digital albums and singles collectively.[5] The group’s immense popularity in their native South Korea has earned them titles “The Nation’s Singers” and “The Nation’s Girl Group”. The Sisa Journal named the group as the most influential entertainers for the years 2011 and 2012, making them the first female idol group in history to make the list. They have also been listed as #1 on the Top Female Singer’s list for four consecutive years on the Leespiar Popularity Survey in Korea. Asia Today placed the group at forty-four on the 50 Korean Power Leaders list in 2011. The group also topped Forbes‘s Korea Power Celebrity 40 list for the years of 2010, 2011 and 2013.

The group began a foray into the Japanese music scene in late 2010 under Nayutawave Records, with Japanese remakes of their 2009 South Korean hits “Genie” and “Gee”. The group’s debut Japanese album, Girls’ Generation, released in June 2011, is currently the highest selling album in Japan by a South Korean group in Oricon history. It was certified “Million” by the Recording Industry Association of Japan, which made them the second South Korean artist to earn such an achievement in Japan since label mate BoA‘s “Best of Soul” in 2005. Girls’ Generation is also the first South Korean girl group to have two albums place first on a weekly album ranking, surpassing Kara.

They have expanded their reach in the South Korean industry through their first sub-unit, Girls’ Generation-TTS, composed of members Taeyeon, Tiffany, and Seohyun. The sub-unit debuted on 2012 with their mini album Twinkle which became the highest charting K-Pop act on the Billboard 200—at No. 126 on Billboard 200.
